Case Study Overview
In 2023, ABP acquired Solent Gateway, the operator of Marchwood Military Port, with plans for its development. This project, known as Phase 2, will maintain the Falklands Jetty, ensuring it remains capable of accommodating a wide variety of vessel sizes for at least another 40 years. Backed by a £17.5 million investment, the scope of work included deepening the berth, constructing two new dolphins, and increasing the load capacity of the existing mooring bollard and fixed fender configurations.

VALUE ENGINEERING
Preserving the existing infrastructure was crucial to avoid building a new berth.
The Red7Marine team were responsible for constructing two dolphins and related structures.
This involved the construction of a mooring dolphin comprising of 9no. piles with 4no. pre-cast concrete units – installed using a bespoke piling gate designed in-house by our team of engineers.
The tri-carousel gate is a modular re-design of a carousel piling gate concept used on previous projects to suit the pile OD and layout for the Marchwood project.
The Solution
The gate was lifted and rotated in place to allow the installation of the piles – three at a time with the aid of an alignment crucifix installed on the central pile. The bolted modular design allows for flexible construction, transport, and re-configuration to suit other projects.
The project also involved the construction of a breasting dolphin (4no. piles with a jacket, fender installation and collision protection pile with a doughnut fender) and a monopile with 2no. linkspans.
Due to the complex location, piling operations were completed from two flat top barges and workboat.
