Thursday Project Highlight.

Today we’re taking a look back on the Liverpool 2 Deep Water Port Extension where we supported BAM Nuttall Ltd with four jack-up barges for the construction of a piled combi-wall as part of the Dock Expansion which began in 2014.

OVERVIEW

Red7Marine undertook extensive planning to allow work in multiple locations in a very challenging estuary entrance. The marine construction work was carried out for Peel Ports Group to increase the container capacity at the Port of Liverpool and allow larger vessels to dock.

LOCATION

The Port of Liverpool has one of the largest tidal ranges in the UK coupled with an uneven riverbed profile. With an exposed estuary entrance, the weather was carefully monitored during the project to minimise any potential delays in vessel movements.

SOLUTION

The original method chosen by the client was to install the piles using the pile top drilling process. Red7Marine designed and fabricated two large modular piling gates to facilitate the installation of the tubular steel piles. The modular piling gates were installed on two jack up barges to allow uninterrupted progress during the pile installation. Due to local ground conditions and adverse weather, the method was eventually changed to install the piles in rock sockets. Rotary drilling rigs were loaded onto the Haven Seariser 1 and Haven Seariser 3 jack up barges, drilling out the rock sockets within casings before the tubular piles were installed and grouted in position.

The Haven Seariser 2 and Haven Seajack followed behind the other jack up barges to install sheet piles between the steel tubes forming the combi-wall structure and provide over water lifting where required.

Red7Marine were able to quickly respond and adapt the marine plant to reflect the change of installation method.

Working closely with BAM Nuttall on a daily basis throughout the construction works allowed for a fully integrated approach to co-ordinate vessel moves and maximise utilisation of the marine equipment. Engineers at the head office supported the site team supplying revised deck plans, site specific assessments and stability calculations as and when required by the client.
