Case Study Overview
Red7Marine was contracted by Mackley Civil Engineering to support critical flood prevention works in West Sussex. Mackley Civil Engineering carried out the works under the Arundel Tidal Defence Scheme (ATDS) on behalf of the Environment Agency and once complete, will improve flood defences in the town of Arundel.
Our Haven Seajack 3 jack-up barge was floated into position which the Mackley s team then used as a stable platform from which to install a new flood defence wall made of steel sheet piles along the River Road stretch
of the ATDS.
At a glance
- Location: Arundel, West Sussex
- Plant used: Haven Seajack 3
- What we did: Our Haven Seajack 3 jack-up barge supported the installation of a new flood defence wall along the River Road stretch of the ATDS for Mackley Civil Engineering
The Challenge
The Arundel Tidal Defence Scheme (ATDS) has been accelerated to quickly reduce the risk of flooding and erosion to properties in Arundel. Mackley Civil Engineering was awarded the contract and Red7Marine supported the works with the provision of its 100t jack-up barge. The Mackley s team carried out the following works from Red7Marine’s Haven Seajack 1:
- Installed a sheet pile wall
- Drilled and installed tie rods. This involves drilling off the side of the barge at an angle of approx. 45degrees, through the sheet pile wall and into the riverbank behind. Once holes are drilled tie rods are inserted then grouted in place.

The Solution
Red7Marine used its adaptability to ensure Mackley’s needs were fulfilled with no risk posed to Arundel’s community. This included having a Red7Marine Barge Master on-site at all times. All government guidance was followed due to the project continuing throughout the Coronavirus pandemic and Red7Marine’s services were delivered in a timely manner.

Fast Response
Due to this project’s time sensitive nature and significance among members of the local community, Red7Marine’s plant continues to be carefully managed as the team shares its expertise and support to maintain the efficiency of this installation.
Collaboration
The Red7Marine team is working closely with Mackley’s, combining our areas of expertise to deliver exceptional results for Arundel’s community. As Red7Marine works alongside Mackley’s talented team, we are aligning our commitments to health and safety on the ground.
Specialist Equipment
Red7Marine’s Haven Seajack 3 jack-up barge is being used in the project as a result of its adaptability. A jack-up barge is fitted with long legs which can be raised and lowered into the riverbed, securing its position. The legs can then be raised to move this barge as and when it is required.
