Case Study Overview
The Walney Offshore windfarm export cables come ashore just south of Heysham in Morecombe bay, Lancashire. One of the cables required repair after faults were discovered with the fibre optic control lines. Red7Marine was contracted by DeepOcean to supply the specialist marine equipment to allow a replacement section of cable to be spliced in place. Due to the location of the repair 3km from shore in the intertidal area, jack up barges were selected to provide stable level working platforms

The Challenge
Morecombe Bay is a very shallow location with strong currents and working in the intertidal zone required stable platforms large enough to carry out the cable splice works. The area can be accessed via the beach at low water but with a 6.5m tidal rise and fall, accommodation units would be required on the barges to ensure 24/7 operations could be carried out.
The Solution
A 400t and 100t jack up barge were mobilised at short notice to Barrow in Furness to provide working platforms for the equipment to carry out the cable repairs. The 400t jack up barge was delivered by a ship to the Port of Barrow where it was assembled and mobilised.
The 400t jackup was configured with a 30m long cantilevered platform along one side of the barge for the cable repair works.
Modular accommodation units for up to 16 persons were installed on each barge to allow for 24/7 operations.
Red7Marine’s in-house engineers provided the bespoke deck configurations, engineering assessments and sea-fastening designs for the barges including the 110t cable reel.
