Westminster Pier Extension

Case Study Overview

The Westminster Pier Extension allows more frequent River Bus services between Woolwich and North Greenwich to Westminster. The extension is a key part of the River Action Plan to improve TfL’s piers and increase capacity for passengers before 2020.

At a glance

  • Location: Westminster, London
  • Plant used: Haven Seaseven jack up barge
  • What we did: Designed and built a custom pile gate. The barge was reviewed to support a 180t crawler crane for piling operations and was then further reviewed with an additional RH28 drill rig on board.

The Challenge

Red7Marine was required to mobilise a 400t jack up barge down the Thames and through the London bridges. Once in location, the barge had to be assembled with appropriate leg length to carry out the work. Red7Marine was asked to design and build a piling gate to safely and accurately install the pile to extend the length of Westminster Pier.

During the contract the piling method had to be changed, which meant that Red7Marine had to mobilise a bored piling rig through the bridges on one of their flat top barges then had to transfer the rig from the floating transportation barge to the jack up barge. Red7Marine provided a full calculation package for this transfer operation and via their operations team successfully carried out the transfer of the rig onto the jack up barge.

The Solution

Red7Marine provided a full calculation package for this transfer operation and via their operations team successfully carried out the transfer of the rig onto the jack up barge.

London Project

Custom engineering

A pile gate was designed and built in-house by Red7Marine to accommodate the pile and its preinstalled guides. The gate needed to ensure that the pile was installed in the correct orientation.

Technical support

When the drilling technique was revised, Red7Marine calculated for an alteration to the drilling technique and additional plant required.

Complete package delivery

From planning to completion Red7Marine was able to support the client with all technical aspects of the project, including mobilising the plant and negotiating the many bridges on the way to the site.

Red7Marine provided a full calculation package for this transfer operation and via their operations team successfully carried out the transfer of the rig onto the jack up barge.
